We are 1 year old today!!!!! 🍾🥂🍾🥂
There have been a lot of times over the past year where we didn’t think we’d make it this far, and the last year hasn’t gone exactly to plan but here we are still going.
On a personal level, at the end of 2018, I (Neil) had somehow been stuck in a toxic workplace in a job I hated for 24 years. A very close family member had just passed away, and my mental health was spiraling rapidly downhill. I knew I had to change something quickly or things were going to go very dark very quickly.
So what do you do when you’re on the verge of giving up on life? Jack it all in and decide to do the thing that has become your lifeline. In a snap decision I decided that later in 2019 I’d run from Switzerland back to Norfolk for charity, and set up ESCAPE trails as a business to come back to.
Once again things didn’t go to plan, and 260 miles into the run from Switzerland I picked up an injury that would mean I wouldn’t be able to run for 6 months. Which also meant that although ESCAPE trails had been registered as a business on May 19th 2019, it had to be put on hold for a bit.
January 2020, and I was back running, and finally we started moving in the right direction and running events. Well I don’t need to tell you what happened next, and again things have had to be put on hold running wise, but we’ve been working hard behind the scenes, and planning events. With lots of new things planned for when we can run together again, a couple of which we will hopefully be announcing within the next couple of weeks, so watch this space!!!
The past year has been incredibly stressful, I’ve had pretty much no income since Covid-19 showed up, and there are days I wake up and I honestly don’t know how I’ll keep the wolves from the door. But I wouldn’t change it for one second, and I don’t regret a thing. That is down to you guys, the support ESCAPE trails has had, has been phenomenal. You’ve signed up to events, shared our posts, and been so understanding when we’ve had to cancel events because of Coronavirus. Even deferring your places to other events instead of asking for refunds, which would have left us with significant financial loses, this is especially meaningful as I realise that some of you will be in the same financial situation as us . I can’t begin to tell you how proud I was to wake up this morning and already see people tagging us on social media whilst out running.
So although we can’t run together at the moment, ESCAPE trails will still be here for when we can. Because we believe trail running has the power to be life changing, and will have a massive part to play after the current situation has ended, not only for people’s physical health, but their mental health too, jeez it literally saved my life and that’s the best recommendation I can give it.
Thank you for all your support
Neil and Hannah x
